The Western Cape
The Western Cape, with its Mediterranean climate, is situated on
the south western tip of the African continent and as a former
stop-over on the trade route, blends a mixture of rich European
culture with
the influence of the East.
Cape Town
Cape Town is the provincial capital of the Western Cape and is a destination
the majority of foreign visitors first make for. It offers travellers
a glimpse of cosmopolitan life set in the shadow of the majestic Table
Mountain. The city boasts one of the country’s five World Heritage
Sites, Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela and others were incarcerated
for many years for their beliefs in a free South African society.
Winelands
The Cape Winelands comprise of beautiful towns of Cape Dutch architecture
surrounded by picture postcard scenery. The wines in this region are
amongst the best in the world.
The Overberg
The Overberg, with its traditional building and history, is located between Cape Town and the Garden Route. Majestic mountains and a scenic coastline surround golden wheat fields, lush forests and fragrant Fynbos. This undiscovered destination has no cities, just towns and villages full of character and hospitable local people. Whale watching is one of the popular activities in this region.
The Garden Route
The Garden Route contains tangled forests, lakes and beaches as well as lovely coastal towns whilst dolphins frolic in sheltered bays. There are many activities to enjoy whether on water or on land including a large selection of walks in the Tsitsikamma and Knysna Forest. Numerous fine golf courses compliment the natural attractions along this beautiful stretch of countryside.
The Karoo
The Great Karoo is a unique arid landscape of flat plains and bare
isolation and is a complete contrast to the green of the Garden
Route. The Little Karoo contains fertile river valleys with rugged
gorges
and scenic mountain passes.
Eastern Cape Province
The Eastern Cape is exceptionally diverse from the dry barren plains of the Karoo to the luscious green forests near the Wild Coast in the East. Amongst the star attractions is the Addo Elephant Park, the most concentrated elephant reserve in Africa. Jeffreys Bay is an ideal spot for surfers. Port Elizabeth, known as “the friendly city” enjoys more sunshine hours and fewer rainy days than any other coastal city in South Africa.
